Granchester Stagecoaches

Peta & Stumpy

About Us, and
The Grandchester Stagecoach Company

Owner of Grandchester Stage Coach Company, Trevor Aylward (better known as "Stumpy") believes that his fondness for horses started many years ago when his grandfather Charles and father Joe used teams of four or six magnificent Clydesdales for farm work, ploughing, transporting the goods and for the feeding of hay. Upon his arrival to Australia from New Zealand with wife Peta in the mid seventies, Stumpy continued with his involvement with horses. Whilst working on a dairy farm in Western Victoria he trained race horses before moving to Moe in Victoria where he continued breaking in Thoroughbreds for a living and also took trail rides up through the old gold mining town of Walhalla.

Stumpy then began his passion competing in rodeo and participated in the event of saddle bronco riding until the age of 40. This brought Stumpy and Peta to North Queensland with their young family of four children; Jade, Jodie, Luke and Kristy.

The Family

Working on numerous cattle properties for several years, Stumpy and Peta decided to make their move even further north to Townsville where Stumpy continued with rodeo while working within the building trade. In 2000, after the children had flown the coop, Stumpy and Peta decided to move to South East Queensland; finally settling in Grandchester in 2007. It was in that year that they made a visit to the working heavy horse expo at the Jondaryan woolshed which helped rekindle their affection for Clydesdales.

With the purchase of the first team members, Tommy and Cruiser it inspired them to buy a replica stage coach which encouraged them to look further into the history of Cobb and Co. The Grandchester stage coach company is now a family run business which enables the public to ride along and share the great outback experiences of the way life once was. Stumpy and Peta are aided in this venture by their team of heavy horses: Cruiser, Lizzie, Tommy, Callum, Ed and Nugget. Inspired by the true great Aussie outback history that Grandchester has to offer, it has paved the way to this new venture. Wanting to offer something more to history lovers who venture to Grandchester, Stumpy is keen to extend the experiences by offering the opportunity for the public to enjoy a camp out under the stars, which he introduced to his tour options in 2010.
